I was not too concerned about the issue because I managed to format the 300 gig ext drive for Mac and it works perfectly. Maybe your external HDD is NTFS and possibly your MP3 player requires drivers other than Apple's generic USB Mass Storage drivers (which may or may not be available in Mac flavour).

It is probably just because it is only guaranteed to work on an Apple supplied drive. It does work fine on a couple of internal non-Apple Pioneer drives in this MDD G4 - wonder if it would with a FireWire DVD drive.
