Using Roxio Toast Titanium (not Apple's Disk Copy) mount the .dmg as a disk image (Command M). Quit Toast. Problem solved. DVD Player will now load and will play a movie from the external DVD drive -- as long as the disk image is mounted. Watching movies on my TiBook wasn't really my objective, incidentally;
